The first step in establishing an answering service is to have an action plan.  As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail.  Here is a basic, yet sound and reasonable action plan:

• Examine your motives

• Consider alternatives

• Research the industry

• Make a working business plan

• Determine your service packages and billing rates

• Evaluate and select equipment

• Determine your launch date

• Begin preliminary marketing

• Find a location

• Buy and install equipment

• Order phone and Internet service

• Hire and train staff

• Begin serving clients -- Congratulations!
